Windows Mobile 6.5

I downloaded and tested Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM on my HTC Kaiser and I have to say it has a much better user interface than its predecessors. It is finger friendly, has tap-scrolling (drag to start scrolling and tap to stop scrolling) and its “Today” screen is much better (very similar to the Hyperdragon ROM). Microsoft took out the menu on the top left. Now, when you click on start the whole screen gets covered with hexagonal containers (the honeycomb interface) containing items that would normally appear when you click “programs” in the start menu.

It is still in beta and (from what I read) was released to manufacturers only but somehow people managed to get hold of it and have made interesting custom ROMs from it. I would not recommend it for someone who needs the ROM to be stable. I had a problem with the on-screen keyboard but that could just be an error from the custom ROM maker and not Microsoft. Opera didn’t work properly because of the keyboard issue. Although, I was able to open the hard keyboard and type in the address I wanted to go to. The ROM itself was a bit slow on Kaiser. Hopefully, that will not be the case for Touch HD and others. Otherwise, it would not be worth the install.

I will try to take some screenshots on my phone and post them here but in the meantime, http://www.1800pocketpc.com/tag/wm65 has some screenshots of the ROM. And, here’s a video of the ROM in action :
